Swarthmore College commissioned SALT to redesign the garden at West House, home of the Vice President for College Advancement. The West House garden is adjacent to SALT’s project at the newly-constructed Whittier Hall.
The garden concept provides privacy for the family, creates a lush backdrop to Whittier Hall, and integrates the existing garden remnants into a new contemporary design. The plan includes a variety of native trees, shrubs, and perennials drawn from the native ecology of nearby Crum Woods. The elegant palette of white flowering plants compliments the facade of the Whittier Building and enhances the diversity of species and cultivars in Scott Arboretum. The yard’s open lawn has been reshaped to facilitate outdoor entertaining and large events.
