With the support of the William Penn Foundation Playful Learning Grant, SALT was part of the schoolyard redesign efforts for Louis H. Farrell Elementary School, William H. Hunter Elementary School, and Joseph Pennell Elementary School from 2018-2024. The Outdoor Playful Learning Gameboards are a culmination of these efforts, designed to spark curiosity and engagement amongst K-3 students through creative learning and play.

Through simple prompts and questions, the gameboards activate students’ abilities to OBSERVE, CREATE, EXPLORE, and INQUIRE around their schoolyard environment while reinforcing literacy, math, and science concepts aligned with the standards set forth by the School District of Philadelphia. Each gameboard design is uniquely shaped by the geometry and forms of its respective schoolyard, creating a playful and meaningful connection to the space.
