Located in the Olde Kensington neighborhood on a former manufacturing site, Hancock Playground has been an active recreational site for nearly a century. Based on community feedback, SALT’s design created a three-part renovation strategy that involved bridging between old and new residents, younger and older populations; embracing the evolution of the neighborhood and its diversity; and celebrating the industrial heritage of the area.
Site improvements include a welcoming entrance with curvilinear asphalt graphics that weave throughout the site, new play areas for toddlers and older children, a fitness zone for teens, adults, and elderly neighbors, and planting that provides shade, creates habitat, and reduces the urban heat island effect. A neighborhood lawn with picnic tables and space for flexible programming and recreational activities sits next to the play area. From there, visitors can also watch basketball games on the newly painted courts.
At the heart of the site, a thrilling play area features a climbing structure that stands as a distinctive attraction at Hancock Playground. The adjacent toddler play area has equipment that will stimulate language development, encourage socialization, and spark imagination.
