SALT DESIGN STUDIO was selected by Get Fresh Daily to conduct community engagement and design a pocket park for a site adjacent to Global Leadership Academy in the Cobbs Creek neighborhood of West Philadelphia. The goal was to create a beautiful and productive garden space dedicated to exploring African culture, the meaning of wellness, and the concept of ubuntu. SALT conducted stakeholder engagement events and hands-on workshops with the girls of the Growing + Glowing Mini Camp, as well with local residents. Installed with neighborhood and school volunteers, the new ‘Freedom Greens & Gardens’ opened to the public on Juneteenth 2021.

Deeply rooted in community, the garden design utilizes raised planters and perimeter beds to shape space, create nooks for seating and gathering, and features a central community table for dining, garden activities and education. Many of the edible plants have deep roots in traditional African cooking and medicinal treatments. Color abounds in plants, graphics, and furnishings, giving Freedom Greens and Gardens lively energy and appeal to all who pass by.
